Dangerous clothing!!

The BBC has reported today that The British Chiropractic Association has announced that various items of clothing can “Wreak Havoc” on our bodies.

The top five dreaded items are cited as Skinny Jeans, Large Handbags, Big hoods, High Heels, and backless shoes. So, gentlemen, you are off the hook.

These finding have been rejected by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and other back experts. So, Ladies, you are off the hook too.

However there is some truth in the message. Our amazing bodies are very good to adapting to what we do most of. So if you do or wear or carry something often your body will compensate by building muscle and changing posture to suit what you are doing.

We all know, by experience or observation, how painful high heels can be and realise that wearing them changes posture and leg shape (that’s why women wear them). However, wear them often enough and it becomes uncomfortable not to wear them. A sure sign that your body has adapted to the ‘new’ shape of you.

The same goes for big (therefore heavy) handbags. If you carry a big and heavy handbag in the crook of your arm then your body will change posture to compensate for the weight on one side of you. This change of posture will be followed quite soon with muscle build to help hold you in that position – even when you put the bag down!!!!

The answer is to do things little and often. Wear highs one day and flats the next. Swap sides with the handbag regularly. Put it over your shoulder sometimes. Remember the 80/20 rule. If you are good to yourself 80% of the time your body can usually cope with being misused 20% of the time.
But If you have aches or pains which don’t go away after a few days seek professional help from a sports or remedial massage therapist or an osteopath or a physiotherapist. Call my clinic on 01323 899563 for help.
